Biennial Infectious Disease Conferences (2017 to date)

The Infectious Diseases Society of Kenya with support from the Ministry of Health, and in collaboration with the Unit of Clinical Infectious Disease University of Nairobi, the Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi, Nairobi Hospital and M P Shah Hospital organize an infectious disease conference in Nairobi every 2 years.

The Biennial Infectious Disease Conference (BIDCon) has been held every 2 years beginning 2017.

BIDCon brings together the largest gathering of practitioners in infectious diseases in Eastern Africa.

Conference participants are provided an opportunity to network with African and international professionals, enhance cooperation with important stake-holders and gain scientific information from within Kenya and internationally.

National Advanced HIV Clinical Course (April 2016)

The National Advanced HIV Clinical Course (NAHCC) is a two-week intensive training program designed to increase the clinical expertise of healthcare professionals who already have considerable experience in medical management of HIV.

The course is organised by the Unit of Clinical Infectious Disease, University of Nairobi, University of Maryland, Baltimore, the National AIDS & STI Control Programme (NASCOP) and the Infectious Diseases Society of Kenya.

The course is conducted to:

  1. Develop the capacity of HIV service-providers to care for complex HIV-positive patients characteristic of mature high-volume cohorts
  2. Increase the number of practicing technical experts within Kenya and the region with capacity to manage HIV

Course IV was held from 4 to 15 April and course V was held from 18 to 29 April. These two courses were sponsored by the Family AIDS Care & Education Services (FACES) program. Courses IV and V were open to applicants working in the Nyanza/Western region.

The courses were held in Kisumu and were the first decentralised courses of the NAHCC. Previous courses had been held at the College of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi from 16 to 27 March 2015 (Course III), 24 March to 4 April 2014 (Course II), and 14 to 25 October, 2013 (Course I).

Antimicrobial Use and Resistance Symposium (June 2015)

The Infectious Diseases Society of Kenya (IDSK), Unit of Clinical Infectious Disease (UCID) University of Nairobi, University of Maryland Baltimore and the Partnership for Advanced Clinical Education (PACE) Project held an Infectious Disease Symposium titled “Antimicrobial Use and Resistance in Eastern Africa” at the Laico Regency Hotel Nairobi, Kenya from 18 – 19 June 2015.

The meeting was attended by doctors and registrars, clinical officers, nurses from all over the country as well as marketers and suppliers of various pharmaceutical products. The key note address was provided by Dr Robert Gallo, co-discoverer of the HIV virus.
